2B – GETTING WASHED UP

Ryan FollisQuestion 2: What is your church’s view on Baptism; what is it, when do you do it, how do you do it, is it essential?

Baptist (Ryan) writes:

The Baptist faith claims great diversity. Worship, prayer, theology, we are all over the spectrum. But Baptism is the common denominator. Taking from the Greek word baptizo meaning literally “to dip under,” Baptists believe in two very important pieces of the Baptism.

First, and most important, the theology of Baptism: while God performs the transforming act of salvation, Baptists believe very strongly that every individual has a choice to receive God’s Grace through Jesus Christ, and it is only with this choice that one should be baptized – also known as “Believer’s Baptism”. And this comes with the “age of accountability.” The age varies from person to person, but most churches have a ritual to prepare students for it. For instance, our church gives out Bibles to students going into the 3rd grade. Many Baptist churches also have a class where basic theology and Scripture is taught to those of a perceived age of accountability.

The second part of baptism is the symbol itself. “We baptize because Jesus was baptized.” Most Baptists would profess that anything short of a Believer’s Baptism by immersion would be a disservice to the act of Baptism. We respect our brothers and sisters of other Christian faiths, but in the Baptist church there is an immense emphasis and incredible celebration around the Baptismal. Usually the candidate for baptism shares a testimony and is asked a few basic questions about their faith. Then, quoting Jesus’ great commission, the person is baptized backwards into the “grave” and rises to life cleansed of their sins.
